The route leads past several well-known attractions such as O Quy Ho Heaven Gate, Silver Waterfall, and the Rong May Glass Bridge. The road is called “Happy Road” because the journey offers an incredible feeling of winding through towering limestone mountains. From the top, you can admire a full panorama of the Dong Van Karst Plateau — a UNESCO Global Geopark. You also see Tu San Alley, the deepest gorge in Southeast Asia, with the emerald Nho Que River flowing through it. The region is home to many ethnic minority communities, allowing visitors to learn about local culture while enjoying the area’s dramatic scenery. Ma Pi Leng is often considered the most attractive pass for international travelers in Vietnam.
3. Khau Pha Pass
Khau Pha Pass sits on Highway 32 between Mu Cang Chai district and Van Chan district in Yen Bai province. It is the longest and most challenging pass along this highway, stretching more than 30 km. Because it stands at an altitude of 1,200–1,500 m, the pass is frequently covered in clouds and fog. In the Thai ethnic language, “Khau Pha” means “horn of the sky”, describing a peak that reaches toward the heavens.
Along the pass, you will pass several famous viewpoints, including Mu Cang Chai Valley — home to some of the largest and most beautiful terraced fields in Vietnam. Every September and October, the well-known “flying over the golden season” paragliding festival takes place here, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors. 4. Pha Din Pass
Pha Din Pass lies on Highway 6, between Son La and Dien Bien provinces. In the Thai language, “Pha Din” means “heaven and earth”, referring to a place where the sky meets the land. This name reflects the dramatic and awe-inspiring nature of the pass.
Pha Din stretches for 32 km and reaches an average altitude of more than 1,600 m. During the journey, you will pass several historical sites connected to Vietnam’s past wars of national defense. For travelers who love both natural scenery and cultural history, Pha Din is an ideal stop.
